HaysMed Set to Begin Renovations of Miller Pavilion

By Alan Wamser - HaysMed News

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hays, Kansas (July 27, 2016))—HaysMed will begin renovations of the Miller Pavilion in August.  The project will broaden patient access to services and expand the surgical waiting area.   The remodel is scheduled to be completed by June of 2017.

The registration area will be relocated closer to the entrance and will result in five individual admissions offices.   There will also be seven new financial counselor offices.  The individual offices afford patients more privacy when checking in at the hospital and also access to financial counselors all in one area.

“The new admissions offices will create a more welcoming environment for patients and families to discuss their private information,” said Steven Brull, HaysMed Admissions Supervisor.  “It also consolidates all our admissions offices into one area.”

A large surgical waiting area will be located east of the new admissions area featuring windows along the entire south side.  The area will include large comfortable waiting chairs, a mini beverage dispenser area, vending machines, flat screen TVs, and an information desk.  All electrical outlets will have USB ports with them to allow for phone charging.  In addition two private consultation rooms will be available for families to privately talk with their physician.

The biggest change will be the entry door to the pavilion.  An automatic revolving door will be installed to provide easier access for patients and also help maintain climate control during hot and cold months.

“The revolving door will make it easier for patients to enter the hospital,” said Shae Veach, Vice President for Regional Operations and Marketing.  “It will also cut down on the heating and cooling costs inside the building.”

The information desk, manned by HaysMed Volunteers, will be moved closer to the entrance doors.  This will allow for patients and visitors to ask questions and easily locate the service they are looking for.

Another added feature will be the relocation and update of the Foundation Donor Wall.  The Donor Wall recognizes friends and benefactors who have provided generous gifts as an investment in HaysMed to ensure quality healthcare for the people of Western Kansas.

Entrance B at the Miller Medical Pavilion will remain open during the renovations and the information desk will remain. The drop off and valet parking will be available and Parking Lot B will remain open.  The pharmacy has been relocated to the lower level of the Bickle Family Tower area and can be accessed through Entrance A.

“We are very excited about the renovations to this area of the hospital.” Said Veach.  “We are pleased to be able to improve the experience of our patients and families when they visit our facility.”

HaysMed Receives Water $mart Landscape Award

By Alan Wamser - HaysMed News

IMG_6330(Hays, KS – July 22, 2016) – HaysMed was the recipient of the 2016 Water $mart Landscape Award for commercial landscapes.  Bob Schumacher and Randy Major, HaysMed Grounds Department Associates, accepted the award from Hays Mayor Eber Phelps.

The award is sponsored by the Hays Beautification Committee in conjunction with the City of Hays with categories for both residential and commercial landscapes.  The award is based on water smart landscaping that exemplifies superior design and follows the seven principles of water smart landscaping.  Those principles include: planning and design, low water use plants, practical turf areas, efficient irrigation, solid amendment, mulches and maintenance.

Hays HaysMed has converted the majority of the hospital grounds to environmentally friendly landscaping.   This type of landscaping reduces erosion, improves habitat and also reduces the use of water.  The project reduced six acres of fescue grass to one acre thus substantially reducing outside water while maintaining an attractive grounds presentation for patients, families and the public.

In addition the hospital incorporated a water barrel tree watering system.

HaysMed Is Reaccredited as a Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI

Tuesday, July 19, 2016 – HaysMed was recently reaccredited as a Chest Pain Center with Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care.

Hospitals that are accredited by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care have achieved a higher level of expertise caring for patients who come in with a complaint of chest pain or are experiencing symptoms of a heart attack.

More than five million Americans visit hospitals each year with chest pain. Heart attacks are the leading cause of death in the United States, with 600,000 people each year dying of heart disease. Coordinating care to reduce treatment time is critical, especially during the early stages of a heart attack, which often includes chest pain.

“I am very proud of my accomplishment and our teams’s commitment and dedication to providing exceptional heart care,” said Carol Groen, RN, BSN,CEN, NE-BC, Six Sigma Green Belt Certified, Manager of Clinical Certification and Special Projects at HaysMed.   Groen oversees the Chest Pain accreditation and is the driving force behind the committee’s success.

Hospitals awarded the Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI designation have dedicated resources to help all types of chest pain patients. These resources include a call team made up of Cardiac Cath Lab staff and an Interventional Cardiologist available 24/7, every day of the year. This team arrives at the hospital within 20 minutes of activation for a suspected heart attack emergency. All team members use an evidence-based, protocol-driven approach to maximize efficiency, which leads to quicker treatment time and improved outcomes.

“I have been able to bring together diverse medical entities such as EMS, the emergency department and cardiology to assess, diagnose and treat patients who come to us with  symptoms of a heart attack. This teamwork between the departments helps ensure all chest pain patients receive appropriate protocol-driven and timely care,” Said Groen.

The goal of the formal accreditation is to significantly reduce the mortality rate for chest pain patients. “It’s important for everyone to recognize the early symptoms of a heart attack.  Knowing the symptoms and calling 911 is critical to survival.” Groen further emphasized.

By achieving Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI Accreditation status, HaysMed demonstrates expertise in the following areas:
• Integrating the emergency department with the local emergency medical system
• Assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients quickly
• Effectively treating patients at low risk for acute coronary syndrome and no assignable cause for their symptoms
• Continually seeking to improve processes and procedures
• Ensuring the competence and training of Accredited Chest Pain Center personnel
• Maintaining organizational structure and commitment
• Constructing a functional design that promotes optimal patient care
• Supporting community outreach programs that educate the public to promptly seek medical care if they display symptoms of a possible heart attack

HaysMed was first accredited as a Chest Pain Center in 2013.

HaysMed Issues POKEMON GO Restrictions

By Alan Wamser - HaysMed News

Hays, Kansas (July 16, 2016) – The Pokemon Go game has rapidly swept across the county.  While it’s encouraging people to get active HaysMed would like to warn players that playing Pokemon Go is not allowed on the hospital premises.

“Hospitals, walk in clinics and doctor’s offices are meant for patients and their families seeking medical attention.”  said Shae Veach, Vice President of Regional Development and Marketing.   “We strongly urge game players to refrain from playing Pokemon Go on the HaysMed grounds.”

As an organization dedicated to health and wellness, HaysMed supports the health benefits that may be gained by community members of all ages who are enjoying Pokemon Go. However, safety, privacy and security concerns for patients are a priority.

“Protecting our patients’and their families’ safety and privacy are our chief concern,” said Veach.  “We have to insure that our patients and families are not inconvenienced.”  Anyone found playing Pokemon Go on hospital property will be escorted off.

HaysMed urges all game players to observe good safety precautions.  A few of those precautions include:

  • Put down phones and headphones when crossing the street.
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
  • Be especially alert when it’s dark out, and make sure you’re visible to drivers.
  • Cross at a traffic signal or crosswalk when possible.

Member of the Month – July 2016

By Alan Wamser - The Center News

austin and sarahNames: Sarah Condray and Austin Powers

Member Since:
Austin: October 2015
Sarah: January 2013

What are your fitness goals for 2016?
Austin: Lifting has become a lifestyle for me over the past 5 years. Honestly my goal is to now help other people achieve their goals with the knowledge I’ve gained.
Sarah: My fitness goals are to continue to get stronger and leaner! To go along with this, I need to work on diet. There are a lot of things I could cut back on here.

What is your weekly workout routine?

Austin: Lately we’ve been following a strength and explosive power workout. It is a four day routine and we include two extra days in with muscle groups we need to hit.
Sarah: I follow the same as Austin, but unfortunately less days a week because of work.

What keeps you motivated?
Austin: Sarah basically forces me to come in on her days off, so I’ve been doing 6 days for quite some time. It definitely helps when people ask me what I’m doing because they want my help to jumpstart their routine.
Sarah: Not to sound sappy, but Austin does! He pushes me to do more than I ever thought I could! It helps now that I’m seeing results and so are the people around me!

Do you have a success story to share?
Austin: Coming out of high school I was 190lbs at roughly 28% body fat. I was a football player so mass was a must; I never took supplements and was in the gym 5 days a week. I currently sit at 210lbs at about 15% body fat and hope to continue my progress toward a healthy lifestyle. It hasn’t always been easy but I’m glad I stuck to it.
Sarah: I used to come to the gym irregularly, run, and lift minimally, and go to classes occasionally. Then I started working out with Austin. Ever since then, I have lost 10lbs while also gaining a ton of muscle. I enjoy coming to the gym and I love seeing the results.

ACR MRI Breast Accreditation seal 2016.jpg-2

HAYS, Kan. (July 8, 2016) –  HaysMed has earned a three-year term of accreditation in Breast MRI as the result of an extensive review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Breast MRI offers valuable information about many conditions and compliments other imaging methods such as mammography or ultrasound.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of patient safety and imaging quality.  It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards, following a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.

The Breast Care Center at HaysMed is also a designated Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners Demonstrate Excellence through Multiple Certifications

By Alan Wamser - Emergency Department News,HaysMed News

Smith Susan small(2)Susan Smith, RN

allison jones small (2)Allison Jones, RN

HAYS, Kan. (July 7, 2016) – Two HaysMed nurses have recently earned board certifications from the Commission for Forensic Nursing Certification. Susan Smith, RN, BSN, SANE-A and Allison Jones, RN, SANE-A have each earned the credential of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner – Pediatric (SANE-P).   This is their second specialty certification focused on the care of sexual assault patients.  Smith and      Jones join the ranks of only 14 Kansas nurses credentialed in SANE-P®.

The earned credential of SANE-P® designates that the recipient has achieved the highest standards of forensic nursing for sexual assault nurse examiners in the pediatric and adolescent population.  A forensic nurse is a nurse who provides specialized care for patients who are victims and/or perpetrators of trauma (both intentional and unintentional).  Forensic nurses are nurses first and foremost. However, the specialized role of forensic nurses goes far beyond medical care; forensic nurses also have a specialized knowledge of the legal system and skills in injury identification, evaluation and documentation.  After attending to a patient’s immediate medical needs, a forensic nurse often collects evidence, provides medical testimony in court, and consults with legal authorities. Forensic nurses at HaysMed conduct medical-legal examinations for victims and perpetrators of sexual assault, child abuse and domestic violence victims. The team currently has five trained SANE nurses and two in training.

Smith and Jones are both nurses in the Emergency Department. Smith has been employed at HaysMed since 2000 and has been a member of the SANE team since 2012. Jones has been employed at HaysMed and been a member of the SANE team since 2010.

HaysMed Offers New Direct Anterior Approach Hip Replacement Surgery

By Alan Wamser - HaysMed News,Orthopedic Institute News

Copy of Dr. Lee OriginalSurgery Offers Patients the Potential for a Shorter Hospital Stay and Quicker Recovery Time

HAYS, Kansas (July 6, 2016)—  Dr. Sukchan Lee, Orthopedic Surgeon at HaysMed performed the first direct anterior approach (DAA) hip replacement surgery at HaysMed in June.  The surgery offers patients the potential for a shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery time.  Dr. Lee is one of the only physicians in Western Kansas who performs this type of surgery but he will be joined by fellow Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Gulraiz Cheema who will begin offering the procedure this fall.

With the direct approach anterior hip procedure the surgeon makes a small incision at the front of the hip instead of through the back or the side of the hip. This approach allows the doctor to reach the hip socket without cutting through major muscles and tendons. The procedure often results in less pain and fewer complications for patients than standard hip replacement.

“Patients recover quicker, discontinue use of a cane or walker sooner, and have a quicker return to a normal gait” said Dr. Lee.

The operation is less invasive on muscles so patients don’t have as many movement limitations during recovery.  “You can bend over; you can reach down to the floor.  You can cross your legs – all movements that patients with a traditional hip replacement surgery have to be careful about.” Lee noted.

Anterior hip replacements were first described in the United States in the 1970s and have gradually gained popularity. During the surgery patients lie on their backs rather than their sides and the procedure requires special operating tables other equipment that HaysMed purchased earlier this year.  Dr. Lee received the special training on this procedure at Harvard Medical School.

Surgeons who perform the procedure also say the anterior position makes it easier for them to use fluoroscopy, a real-time x-ray technique that allows doctors to precisely position the implanted artificial hip. That, in turn, may allow artificial hips to last longer.

“It’s exciting to be able to offer patients this option in hip replacement surgery.” Said Lee.  “Not every patient meets the criteria for direct anterior hip replacement but if they do qualify they should experience a quicker recovery and shorter hospital stay.”
