Rave Reviews May 2017

By Alan Wamser - Rave Reviews

Pain Clinic
*Dr. Lenser is fantastic! Very knowledgeable and calming during my procedures. Connie was so helpful for me, describing the steps I needed to prepare for the epidural. Katrina is just too sweet. Personable, checking on me afterwards. The pain clinic staff is wonderful.

Women’s Center—OB
*The nursing staff was extremely helpful during our study. Both day and night nurses took the extra time to help us with any question or concerns we had. The guidance on breastfeeding was excellent.
*We were very happy with our nurses and doctor. Thank you for making sure our family was safe and in good hands.
*All of my nurses have been excellent. Whitney my night time nurse was so good. Very patient with me. Patti my daytime nurse was excellent as well. This whole process has been amazing from the start. Dr. Hoskins and his nurses and office staff were all very professional and pleasant. I got way better care here than my own hometown.
*Service was great!
*Just like with my first C-section delivery, my care, as well as my daughter’s was exceptional. My nurses were Nicole, Susan, Dyane, Lolly and I know I’m forgetting someone. All of these women were phenomenal. I was fortunate to have Nicole with both deliveries. The nurses are well knowledgeable, kind, caring, personal and made my recovery at the hospital much more pleasant. Thank you ladies for all of your help those first few days.
*Lisa in OB was amazing during the delivery of my daughter. She made me feel welcome and at ease from the time I checked in. She was so knowledgeable, I had no worries at all.

ICU
*I would like to thank the nurses I had during my stay. They did all they could to help me be comfortable. I gave them a bad time because I was full of anxiety. Thankfully they did all they could to help me relax. I’m sorry for my actions but grateful for their actions. I’m grateful they were professionals.
*From the Plainville Hospital to here at HaysMed, I could not comprehend my daughter receiving any better care anywhere else. Everyone from doctors, nurses, therapists, etc. have shown nothing but wonderful care and support for her. I will be forever grateful to everyone.
*Very helpful and courteous. Tinia and Courtney ICU nurses were great.

Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center
*I have been coming here to see Dr. Hornick and his staff since before the first of the year and Dr. Hornick has always treated me with respect and concern. And his staff in the wound clinic and HBO have always treated me with respect and professionalism as well. But the ones that stood out to me or that went above and beyond are Jeff. Absolutely did that for me. God bless Him. And Michelle in the HBO room—she is definitely an angel and Dr. Hornick is a very respectful, professional person. Thank all of you and them very much.

Ambulatory Care Center
*Suzie was great in pre op an post op—very pleasant and helpful.
*My nurse was great despite my crabbiness when I got here due to hunger, thirst and pain. The OR team was good.
*Awesome care with all staff members!
*Kat Moss was very nice to me during my pre-operation and after in the recovery. Please give her a raise as I feel she did a very good job with me.

PT/OT/Speech—Inpatient Services
*PO/OT while it can be a struggle for me to do, the staff are very compassionate and educated in their field. They are fun to work with if you can say “fun”. I can’t remember the OT’s name but she was good at making sure you don’t’ slack off. I worked with Joyce, Aaron and Stephanie in PT. It is very important to have staff like these for success on knee replacement. Had left done on November 2016 and right done January 2017.
*All of the staff who have been attending my wife are genuinely caring people. They also take the time to answer any questions we had to the best of their knowledge and capacity. Dr. K. Gray is very good at explaining progress also. No one gave us the “brush off”.
*Very good. Explained things very well. Not in any hurry to go. Stephanie is outstanding. *I was very satisfied with the service I received. Everyone was professional and cordial.
*I have nothing but praise for HaysMed. I was there for back surgery from Dr. Sharma. He is absolutely WONDERFUL!!!! And so is his staff Rebecca Green. Plus everyone in the operating room were WONDERFUL. I received the best of care after my surgery from everyone. Hays, Kansas is so fortunate to have this great facility. I cannot thank you enough for the care I received from everyone while here. God Bless you all.

Mammography
*The staff and the girls doing my mammogram are so nice. The girls doing the ultrasound were both so nice and made me feel at ease in such a stressful situation. Thank you.

CPCU
*Everyone treated me like royalty. All were exceptionally kind and professional. This visit was the cleanest I have ever seen Hays medical Center. The man who brought lunch up was also kind and caring and made sure I was in the correct position to eat.
*Best care ever. Could not ask for smarter nurses! What a wonderful place!
*I had the best care imaginable at HaysMed. From the time the ambulance arrived in the early morning hours; my care was exceptional. All nurses, doctors, admission, labs, etc. were so dedicated and caring. I will always suggest patients go to HaysMed.

Bone, Joint & Spine Center
*Everybody I had contact with on the nursing staff and PTAs were exceptionally sweet, caring and professional.
*Words cannot express the gratitude I have for the Bone, Joint and Spine Center. Exceptional care was given to me Christmas Eve and Christmas Day when I could not be with family. My husband, nurses and staff were there to lift my spirits and keep me out of pain, before and after surgery. Sincerest thanks. Also Taylor never missed an opportunity to be there when needed.
*Very friendly and helpful staff. Met all my needs very well.
*Love the student nurse program. Brandon did an outstanding job. Always had and made time for me. Everyone was upbeat, cheerful—night and day. Lauren did above and beyond to be helpful. Connie did a good job. Food was good. Custodial crew did phenomenal job of keeping room clean. Always made sure I had what I needed.

DeBakey Heart Institute
*My primary care physician and cardiologist provide outstanding medical care. I also have had one operation at Hays Medical Center. I am especially pleased with the excellent quality of health care I have received here.

Cath Lab

*The appointment was one of the best I have had here at HaysMed. The Nurse Kaitlyn was excel- lent—she took great care of me and let me know what was happening before she did it. She was very thorough. Dr. Anaya was very thorough as well. I had a tilt table test done and he was there with Kaitlyn through it all. From the phone call from Devin to remind me of my appointment to the writing of this letter a+ for all involved. Thank you very much.
*Aimee, Devin, Zach, Carmen, Pat—were all great at making me feel comfortable and informing me of what they were doing to prep me for my up coming procedures. Because of the attitude and nature of the people I was in contact with today, I would not hesitate to return for any other needed procedure.
*Very fine service and explanations as well as thoughtful consideration. (warm blankets, breakfast after procedure)
*Everyone was so, awesome You guys are a GREAT team. You know your jobs! I felt so well cared for and things were explained so good!. Thank You So Much!

Acute Care
Went to ER early am. Dr. Yarmer and his nurse were amazing. I felt like my pain and concerns were also theirs. Everything was done very fast and found the source of my pain. Surgery was scheduled. I was admitted. Every staff member I came into contact with during my 2 day in patient was great. Friendly, caring—took very good care of me. Dr. Cunningham, Dr. Pfitziner informed me of everything . Every nurse and nurses aid was great. I wish I could remember the ER Nurse be- cause she was great.

*I feel like a new woman. Didn’t know that this was even possible! Wonderful experience, has made my life sooo much better.

Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute
*I had cancer 6 years ago and was treated here and again I’m back. There are no words to describe how scary it is when you’re told you have cancer. This medical center is the absolute “Top of the Line”. The doctors, specialists, nurses, etc. I cannot say enough about how I’ve been treated so kindly. You have not idea how much you are appreciated.

HaysMed Foundation Launches $3 Million Capital Campaign

By Alan Wamser - HaysMed News

HaysMed friends and community leaders came together Thursday, April 27, to celebrate the public announcement of the HaysMed Foundation’s $3 million “Powerful Technology, A Look Inside” Campaign.

The Campaign, led by co-chairs Dr. Tom and Debra McDonald, will result in a state-of-the-art CT scanner, patient monitors, renovation of two catheterization labs, and the establishment of new endowed funds at the Foundation.“We know that the people of western Kansas understand the importance of having access to a strong and evolving medical center,” stated Debra McDonald. “We are confident that we will see our friends and supporters in western Kansas open their hearts to raise the necessary funds for these essential projects.”

HaysMed President and CEO Dr. John Jeter discussed a key component of the Campaign, a new CT scanner that replaces a 14 year-old scanner. The new large bore CT scanner captures detailed images of vital organs in only a fraction of a second while significantly reducing the radiation dose up to 82% from traditional CT scanners. The new CT can complete whole organ exams (heart, brain, liver, kidneys) with only one rotation instead of 40 required by traditional scanners.

Another part of the Campaign is the replacement of all patient monitors that will integrate with HaysMed’s electronic medical record system and offer a more comprehensive way to monitor patients’ health status.

The medical center’s two catheterization labs will also be renovated and new equipment purchased. A cardiac catheterization is performed to find out if a patient has disease of the heart muscle, valves or coronary arteries.

The fourth component of the Campaign includes the establishment of endowed funds that will produce revenue to assist with future healthcare needs of patients at HaysMed.

Matt Dreiling, President of the Foundation Board of Directors spoke about the importance of investing in the medical center and its healthcare services for now and in the future.

“It will support care for our children who get hurt in sports; the parent who has a heart attack; or a friend involved in a car accident,” stated Dreiling.

Dreiling announced that through the early, generous support of individual, business and foundation donors, the Campaign has already raised more than $1,554,000 in gifts and pledges. This includes a $500,000 gift from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation of Logan, KS and a $500,000 pledge from the Hadley Foundation of Hays.

Other major donors include Lillian Schumacher, Bank of Hays, Commerce Bank, Emprise Bank, Golden Belt Bank, and Nex-Tech Wireless. Additional gifts have been received from both HaysMed and Foundation Board members, HaysMed associates and physicians, community and area businesses and many individuals who contributed during the quiet phase of the Campaign.

Ruth Heffel, Executive Director of the Foundation, also brought people’s attention to the Foundation’s new donor wall that honors individuals, businesses, corporations, and foundations who have given generously to HaysMed over time. The wall was designed and created by local artist James Mages. The sculpture reflects western Kansas with stalks of brass wheat and incorporates the names of donors on lexan plaques.

People interested in receiving more information about the Powerful Technology Campaign and how to support the effort, can visit www.haysmedfoundation.org or call the Foundation office at (785) 623-2350.

Member of the Month – April 2017

By Alan Wamser - The Center News

Member Since: February 2016

What are your fitness goals for 2017?
In 2017 I want to lose some more weight until I finally feel comfortable in my own skin. After I hit that weight, I want to cut fat and work on my endurance. This year, I want to compete in a Warrior Dash.

My main goal this year is to fix my diet and eat much healthier foods, consisting of more protein and veggies and less cookies and sugar.

What is your weekly workout routine?

I like to start my workout each day by going into the gym and shooting around for about 20-30minutes to get my heart rate up and get my muscles pumping on all cylinders. After that my workouts switch between upper and lower body every day. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I work on my upper body and lower body on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. I don’t spend a whole day on one specific muscle, but I do work some muscles harder than others depending on what needs more attention. After I do my workout I finish with some HIIT abs training. Some days I will go back down to the gym and shoot around for a cool down, but I usually run out of time.

What keeps you motivated?

My motivation comes from a picture that I took on my phone when I decided to change. It was after I finished my “first” workout. When I look at that picture I get ashamed of what I used to be and I know that I will never allow myself to become that person again, and since that day I have never looked back.

Do you have a success story to share?

When I first joined The Center I weighed nearly 270 pounds, I always ached and pained and the farthest I could go was from the couch to the fridge, where had to take a break before making it back. I finally decided one day that I had enough. I decided to join a gym and I HATED IT! I would go in and get out in an hour and a half or less but I forced myself to do it. Then I started to see results. I will say the most satisfying thing a person can witness is watching their own body change for the better after putting in hard work. Now I weigh less than 200 pounds, my body feels a million times better, and I go to the gym to escape my everyday thoughts and end up staying for hours because there is no other place I would rather be. It has changed my life with such impact that I can never see myself taking my foot off the gas.

By Alan Wamser - HaysMed News

HAYS, Kansas ¾ Commerce Bank and the HaysMed Foundation have announced the creation of the Commerce Bank Endowment with a gift of $25,000.

“At Commerce Bank, we believe in having a close relationship with the communities we serve,” said Deron O’Connor, President of the Hays Commerce Bank. “Having quality healthcare close by is a great concern for our families, friends and neighbors in Western Kansas.  Our Endowment will be a permanent source of funding for special healthcare projects at HaysMed.”

Endowment gifts at the HaysMed Foundation are established to provide perpetual support for a project, program, or other needs of the medical center. The fund is permanently invested with the earnings providing continuous revenue streams for the purpose specified by the donor.

“HaysMed is pleased to partner with Commerce Bank who has been very generous to many community organizations over the years,” said HaysMed President and CEO John Jeter, M.D. “The Commerce Bank Endowment will provide a continuous stream of funding to assist HaysMed with equipment and patient care programs that will benefit the people of Western Kansas for years to come.”

Since it was founded more than 150 years ago, Commerce Bank has continually expanded its long-standing investment in its people, technology, product offerings and service channels to bring the utmost value and convenience to its customers, thus improving the bank’s ability to serve the evolving financial needs of its customers.
