HAYS, Kansas (June 14, 2017)—  Eight registered nurses at HaysMed were honored recently at a recognition ceremony and luncheon.  They completed the yearlong RN Residency Program offered at HaysMed.

The program began a year ago in July 2016 and the nurses spent the first 3 weeks in a classroom setting.  The remainder of training focuses on clinical experience, one on one mentorship with their preceptor, high-fidelity simulations and on the job training. Additionally, nurses receive training from professionals in several departments, such as radiology, pharmacy, cardiac care, OB and others.

The RN Residency class included Bailee Bittel, RN, Jaryn Brown, RN, Emily Disney, RN, Lauren Finger, RN, Lydia Hynek, RN, Kristen Lorenc, RN, Kylie Stoppel, RN and Silver VanWey, RN.

The RN Residency Program at HaysMed is one of only two in the state and has been offered since 2008.  Shari Hertel, RN heads the program and has oversight of all the training.   HaysMed also works closely with critical access hospitals in the region through a rural residency program to provide training to nurses practicing in the rural setting.

“It is a great program.” said Hertel.  “Having one year of focused, on the job evidenced based learning produces nurses who are more confident and competent in their skills which translates into improved patient care.”

Currently there are 7 nurses scheduled in the next program which begins in July.  There are also 9 nurses from Colby, Smith Center and Beloit in the Rural Residency program.  The program is open to newly graduated RNs.

Rave Reviews June 2017

By Alan Wamser - Rave Reviews

Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center

*I have received excellent care from all of the staff at the wound care clinic. They are kind, considerate, helpful and you are lucky to have them as loyal employees. I would recommend them to anyone who needed their help. I enjoy being in their care. Thank you so much.

*I have always been happy and satisfied with all doctors and nurses who have helped me. Dr. Rich Clausing has been especially helpful to me.

*We’ve been treated great—very helpful. We thank you.

*I have always been treated with great respect and professionalism. The staff are really great people and are great to come see every week.

*I have been going to the wound healing clinic for several months now. d to name all of the employees by name that has been special, well I can’t do it…I don’t remember all their names, but here are the ones I do remember. Dr. Hornick, Jeff, Michelle (HBO). The three ICK students that I scared the heck out of. The receptionist that puts my wrist brand on every week, as well as all I encountered.

Cath Lab

*This hospital is very helpful to me because it had a local hotel for me to stay at before and after my medical procedure—at a low price. The staff was very professional, helpful, friendly and kind at all times.

*As a 38 year old congestive heart failure patient there has been a whirlwind of caregivers that have graced by my stay. All have given exceptional care from the ER to the cardiac unit. And not to forget my favorite “Room Service”. The meals have been exceptional even with a restricted diet. A hugh thanks to all that have made my stay a blessing.

*Very good care.

CPCU

*The nurses and CNAs were great. Lindsey, RN and her young CNA were courteous, professional, caring , always smiling. Daytime CNA was Denna I believe. Older blonde so great – got my shower ready—I was treated like a king. Lindsey even sent a card, so sweet.

*Anne-Leena in ER is the most amazing attentive nurses. She is compassionate—treated me like her only patient! She is absolutely amazing! She deserves a pat on the back!! Patty in CPCU is super nice! She always took care of my needs quickly so super sweet and warm hearted. Please give her a pat on the back.

*All of the personnel from whom I received services were exceptionally professional, knowledgeable and friendly. Kathy y first primary is “informed informing” and a droll comedienne. Susan is earnest, told every itty bitty detail to be repeated (with her big smile) until one realizes they have been educated as to highly sophisticated medical (to a sense of safety. Her perfect love cast out my fear……The DeBakey physicians instilled (esp medication) data in lay communication. Liz dealt with a “wigged out” geriatric me and talked me down with yet more confidence and hope. From housekeeping to dietary to respiratory therapy Hays Med is a success for the inpatient trapped in a failing body. Thank you.

*Great facility—100% friendly staff. The doctors were excellent. The girls magnificent. The food was good, except the coleslaw needs work.

Ambulatory Care

*Thank You! I was very worried, but everything went just fine. My nurses were very polite and professional and caring.

PT/OT/Speech

*Am so very grateful of all the excellent care in which I received while as a patient here. I would definitely recommend this hospital and their staff any time. Accomplished movement with their help and patience again.

Bone, Joint and Spine

*After my injury I was admitted to joints prior to going to OR. Laura and Payton were awesome. Very professional and caring. Night nurses were great also. This group of staff work together closely and cohesively. They made an ugly fall more tolerable.

Women’s Center—OB

*All the nurses and Dr. Fort were very helpful and positive during my delivery! I had a great experience and would recommend HaysMed OB to anyone expecting.

*It was a great experience. Each and every staff member, doctors was always willing to help. Delivering a baby, and taking initial care, especially for a first timer, is never easy. But HaysMed actually made it possible.

*Great nurses and students. Dr. Hoskins was great as well. I had a wonderful experience here at HaysMed.

*Amazing OB nurses. They helpd deliver my son and did a great job. Very satisfied.
*Absolutely loved my personal care and the care our son received. The nurses all have been very kind and helpful.

*Amanda that helped us in delivery was very good at her job. She took extremely good care of us. The delivery doctor was outstanding. The staff was very supportive and helped right away with anything and everything we needed. I would give it a 10/10. Thank you so much.

*I had amazing care provided to me from all the staff. It was great service for not just me but also my fiancé. Speedy response time and provided all the information I needed. All in all I would recommend Hays Medical to anyone!! Thank you all so very much.

*I am taking a moment to acknowledge someone on your staff who so impressed us as grandparents on the morning our granddaughter was born. I believe that the nurse was named Anne. From the moment we arrived prior to delivery, and then again when we returned with our two other grandsons, not only was she outstanding in her nursing assistance, but she went out of her way to help those two young brothers welcome our granddaughter into this world.

Faith and family are most important to us so you can imagine how touched we were on that early morning of April 22, 2017. She was patient and so kind to the boys and en- gaged them in cleaning her up and taking her footprints. I am so confident that this is not the first girl she has welcomed into the world but she made all of us feel so at home with our new addition. She approached her nursing duties with such a kind heart and welcoming atmosphere that it made our joyful moments even more joyful.

Many times in this world people only take time to complain about patient treatment, but we believe that people should be acknowledged for the blessings they bestow on the patients and guests that they encounter. This was our first trip to your medical facility and I can tell everyone about the positive experience there. I believe that it is not as much about what you say to people as it how you make them feel. We can’t say for sure, but we wouldn’t be surprised if she rode to the hospital on a white horse for her shift that day. Thanks Anne

HaysMed Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center Highlights Wound Care Awareness Week June 5 – 9

By Alan Wamser - HaysMed News,Would Healing & Hyperbaric Center News

Hays, Kansas (June 5, 2017) Hays, KS—The HaysMed Wound Healing Center is highlighting Wound Care Awareness Week to help education the public on the chronic wound epidemic and raising awareness of advanced wound care treatments and its benefits.  The Wound Healing Center was recently named a Wound Center of Excellence for 2016.  In both 2015 and 2016 it was name a Center of Distinction which earned them the classification of Center of Excellence.

Chronic wounds affect approximately 6.7 million people in the U.S. and the incidence is expected to rise at a rate of two percent annually over the next decade. An aging population and increasing rates of diseases and conditions such as diabetes, obesity and the late effects of radiation therapy contribute to the chronic wound epidemic. Untreated, chronic wounds can lead to diminished quality of life and possibly amputation of the affected limb. Approximately 30 percent of untreated chronic wounds result in amputation.

The Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center treats approximately 300 patients per year which translates into around 2500 patient encounter visits.  Likely candidates for treatment at the center are those suffering from diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, infection, compromised skin grafts and flaps and wounds that haven’t healed within 30 days.  The center treat these wounds and works to prevent reoccurrence by correcting contributing factors such as controlling infection and enhancing medical and nutritional status.

Treating wounds is a complex task.  Each case is unique and patients will heal at varying rates.  The Wound Healing Center staff is prepared to handle a variety of different wounds which includes:

  •  Any wound failing to improve with multiple treatments or therapies

    •    Late effects of radiation therapy
    •    Post-operative infections
    •    Slow or non-healing surgical wounds

    •    Burns

There are many risk factors that may lead to chronic wounds including:

  • Malnutrition and diet
    •    Circulation problems
    •    Infection
    •    Aging
    •    Diabetes
    •    Hyperglycemia – especially blood sugars over 150
