By Gayla Wichman - DeBakey Heart Institute News,HaysMed News

Hays, KS (Sept 11, 2017) – HaysMed’s DeBakey Heart Institute has recently established a clinic for people who have peripheral artery disease (PAD).  Dr. M. Javed Ashraf, MD, MPH,  interventional cardiologist specializes in peripheral artery disease.

PAD is a narrowing of the peripheral arteries to the legs, stomach, arms and head but most commonly seen in the arteries of the legs.  PAD is caused by atherosclerosis that narrow and blocks arteries in various critical regions of the body.

You may be at risk for PAD if you smoke, have diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, experience pain in your lower extremities, have non-healing wounds of lower extremities or varicose veins.  The risk for PAD also increases with age.

The PAD clinic can screen, diagnosis and manage patients with suspected or established peripheral artery disease and varicose veins.  Dr. Ashraf performs diagnostic and therapeutic peripheral angiograms and vascular interventions including percutaneous balloon angioplasty and stenting. Patients seen in the PAD clinic will receive a detailed comprehensive vascular assessment.  Dr. Ashraf works closely with the Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center with PAD Patients who have non-healing ulcers.

CLOGGED ARTERIES IN LEGS POSE MAJOR HEALTH RISK

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News,Would Healing & Hyperbaric Center News

HaysMed Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center recognizes September as
Peripheral Arterial Disease Awareness Month

Hays KS (Sept 6, 2017) – HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health Center is highlighting information on Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) as part of a PAD Awareness month in September. PAD is a condition that develops when the arteries that supply oxygen-rich blood to the internal organs, arms and legs become completely or partially blocked as a result of atherosclerosis (buildup of plaque). PAD can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, amputation and possibly death. PAD affects 8 to 12 million Americans, which is why September is recognized as PAD Awareness Month.

There are many possible side effects of atherosclerosis including angina and heart attacks if the coronary arteries are involved; strokes and transient ischemic attacks if the carotid and vertebral arteries are involved; and claudication, non-healing leg ulcers and critical limb ischemia if the lower extremity arteries are involved. Chronic toe and foot sores are common in people with PAD, as are cramping, numbness, weakness or heaviness in the leg muscles. Many patients with PAD do not experience symptoms.

“While some with PAD do not experience symptoms, people should be aware of certain factors that put them more at risk,” said, Todd Walburn, BSN, RN, Director of the Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center at HaysMed.  “Smokers are four times at greater risk, African Americans are more than twice as likely to have PAD, and one in every three people over the age of 50 with diabetes is likely to have the disease.”

The Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center at HaysMed recommends the following action steps to help manage PAD:

  • Lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, correcting blood pressure and cholesterol numbers
    • Smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are major risk factors for the development of PAD. Managing these conditions can help improve blood circulation.
  • Develop healthy eating habits and an exercise plan
    • Exercising can help increase the circulation and reduce pain in the lower extremities. Walking, hiking and bike riding are good exercise options. A personal trainer can help tailor a custom workout plan that best fits a person’s needs.
  • Medications
    • Always consult with a physician about which medications may help PAD and if they are needed.
  • Special procedures and surgeries
    • In some severe cases of PAD, surgery may be needed to open arteries that have narrowed. Consult with a physician to see if surgery is a necessary treatment.

For more information about PAD and treating chronic wounds, contact the Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center at 785-623-5602 or go to www.haysmed.com/wound-center/.

Mother’s Milk Donation Center Established at HaysMed

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News,Women-Infant Services

Milk donations help save the lives of infants in need

Hays, Kansas (Aug 24)—  HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System in collaboration with the Ellis County Breastfeeding Coalition,  has established a Mothers’ Milk Bank (MMB)depository and is now accepting the donation of breast milk for MMB, a Colorado based nonprofit program of Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation who collects, processes and provides human donor milk. The program is being made possible through donations from the HaysMed Foundation.

Human milk is the key to a healthy future, providing newborns and babies with essential immune properties, growth factors, hormones and enzymes that they cannot get from formula. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, infants should be fed human milk exclusively for the first six months of life. If mother’s own milk is unavailable, donated milk from a human milk bank approved by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America, which MMB is a member, is the next best choice.

On Wednesday, August 30 the OB/Lactation Department and the Ellis County Breastfeeding Coalition will have a display in the Miller Pavilion with information on the Mothers’ Milk Bank.  From 11:00 am – 1:00 pm members of the OB Department and coalition will be on hand to answer specific questions.

HaysMed will be following MMB’s strict guidelines to ensure that milk donations are delivered safely to MMB’s Denver facility where it is pasteurized and distributed to babies across the country whose mothers cannot supply sufficient milk for their needs.

Since 2011, MMB has provided more human milk donations to hospitals than any other milk bank in the country producing an average of 12,000 ounces of human milk every week. Babies who receive milk donated by mothers in Ellis County and across the nation may be premature or have severe illnesses and need human milk to thrive.

MMB consistently provides more milk to newborn intensive care units than any other nonprofit milk bank in North America and adheres to the strict guidelines of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America.

HaysMed is one of three sites in Kansas that participate in the program.

To become a breast milk donor, mothers must undergo a blood test and health screening, be willing to donate a minimum of 150 ounces total, and have a medical release form signed by a medical provider.

For a full list of donor qualifications, please call 1-303-869-1888 or visit the Mothers Milk Bank website.  Women interested in donating milk may fill out the donor screening form on MMB’s website at www.milkbankcolorado.org or call 303.869.1888.

HaysMed’s Medical Oncology/Hematology Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certification Renewed for another 3 Years

By Gayla Wichman - Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute,HaysMed News

HAYS, KS (Aug 14, 2017) – The HaysMed Medical Oncology/Hematology Section of the Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute has been recertified by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certification Program, an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).  The QOPI® Certification Program provides a three-year certification for outpatient hematology-oncology practices that meet the highest standards for quality care.  HaysMed’s recertification is for another three years through May of 2020.

“We’re extremely proud to receive QOPI recertification for ASCO”, said Dr. Robert Rodriguez, Medical Director of Medical Oncology/Hematology.  “It represents our sincere commitment to excellence for our patients.”

QOPI analyzes individual practice data and compare these to more than 160 evidence-based and consensus quality measures.  The information is then provided in reports to participating practices.  Individual practices are also able to compare their performance to data from other practices across the country.  Based on this feedback, doctors and practices can identify areas for improvement.

To become certified, practices have to submit to an evaluation of their entire practice and documentation standards.  The QOPI® Certification Program (QCP™)  staff and steering group members then verify through on-site inspection that the evaluation an documents are correct and that the practices meet core standards in areas of treatment, including:  treatment planning; staff training and education; chemotherapy orders and drug preparation; patient consent and education; and monitoring and assessment of patient well-being.

The QCP™ is a project of ASCO’s Institute for Quality, an ASCO affiliate dedicated to innovative quality improvement programs.  It was launched in January 2010, with more than 200 practices already certified.  This certification for outpatient oncology practices is the first program of its kind in the United States in which oncologists can achieve certification by meeting the highest standards of care.  The QCP seal designates those practices that no only scored high on the key QOPI quality measures, but meet rigorous chemotherapy safety standards established by ASCO and the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS).
