Focus on Ford County: Q&A with Felecia Minyard, APRN, of HaysMed Multispecialty Clinic in Dodge City
At HaysMed, we’ve always believed healthcare is at its best when it’s local and personal. Convenience is key, and everything we do is designed to make it easy for you to access not only the care you need, but the best care available. That’s why we ensure HaysMed’s exceptional care is conveniently accessible for people in and around Dodge City.
To explain more about the primary and specialty care options available at the HaysMed Multispecialty Clinic in Dodge City, we sat down with Felecia Minyard, APRN. As an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) with 20+ years of experience, Felecia provides comprehensive primary care for children and adults of all ages at the Dodge City clinic.
What types of care and services are available for patients at the HaysMed Multispecialty Clinic in Dodge City?
It’s a multispecialty clinic – so there are several types of care options available under one roof, all right here without leaving Dodge City. So that’s very nice and convenient for the patients. I provide primary care services, and our clinic is also home to specialists in orthopedics, cardiology, general surgery, pulmonology, and urology – plus, we are connected to every type of specialist at HaysMed. And it’s really nice because patients can establish with us when they’re healthy, so we can go over their full health history and get their medications. Then, if they develop an acute illness and need specialized care – here or via referral to a specialist at HaysMed – everything is already in the system and their care can be coordinated for the best results.
Would you say your patients are happy to have the HaysMed Multispecialty Clinic in Dodge City? What do they say about it?
Yes. There definitely is a large need here in the community. This clinic benefits patients because we can collaborate professionally with other providers to make sure there is continuity of care – and to keep as much of your care close to home as possible. For example, if you’re a patient under the care of a HaysMed cardiologist and you need to have your lab work done, you can come here, have your labs drawn, and the results will be entered here at the clinic and sent right to your cardiologist through our integrated system. The process just makes the whole healthcare system flow faster. We also don’t have that delay in trying to get outside records from other places or requesting lab results and not repeating tests that you just had done.
This is a unique model for rural healthcare in Western Kansas. How is it different?
It’s very comprehensive. It’s very nice to have that collaboration with these specialty clinics because you might be seeing urology, and we have a question about one of your medications. I can always reach out to urologists, touch base with them, see if it’s okay that we make this adjustment. Or if you’re seeing one of the cardiologists that comes here for outreach, we can see whenever they’re here next, and we can get the testing and screenings done ahead of time.
Tell us about what you do as a primary care provider at the HaysMed Multispecialty Clinic in Dodge City.
I see patients of all ages, from newborns to seniors. With a goal of helping my patients stay healthy and providing personalized care when they are sick or injured, my team and I provide wellness checks, preventive health services, screenings, vaccinations and much more, including expert management of chronic and acute medical concerns. Whether it’s a patient who has always had regular, on-time primary care or someone who hasn’t seen a doctor in years, we welcome everyone to see us for better health and great healthcare.
We are accepting new patients, and like all providers here at the clinic, we try to address gaps and unmet needs that limit access to healthcare in rural areas. For instance, when patients speak little or no English, we know that’s a barrier to seeking out the care they need, so we have translation services available.
What do you like best about working in Dodge City?
I like practicing in Dodge City because in a rural setting you get that small town feeling. It’s very personalized care. And I like that. I like being able to follow up on my patients and see them go through different phases of their lives or meet their healthcare goals. There are always opportunities to help people, educate people, and improve their lives. It’s been very rewarding – a great career – and I’ve been very happy with it. The need in the community is what drew me to this clinic.
